Three for the weekend, Issue #1
One single, one album, and one artist's creative process | 9.25.20
📻 Hi, thanks for tuning in to Arpeggio.
The focus of Arpeggio is to provide fresh, curated music as well as data & analysis of the music biz. Curated music is important because, in a world dominated by streaming companies, there are independent artists who deserve the spotlight.
In this new series Three for the weekend, I’m sharing one single, one album, and one recording artist's creative process to listen to at your leisure over the weekend.
“Gas” by Gianni Lee & Andrea Valle
Gianni Lee and Andrea Valle are two rising artists from Philadelphia whose single I’ve had on repeat for the last month.
It’s hard to put your finger on exactly what Gianni Lee and Andrea Valle’s “Gas” sounds like. But it sure is catchy. These two multi-hyphenate creatives from Philadelphia have created a dreamy and deconstructed universe on their collaborative debut “Gas.” The song is both minimal and cinematic, blending crisp 808s with a hypnotic synth melody and a downtempo backbone. The life of the track is buoyed by Andrea’s captivating crooning, a sinewy and delicate vocal effort that adds a dreamlike quality to the final output. “Gas” stirs up the imagination and shows off the duo’s creativity and outside-the-box style. Expertly crafted, and delightfully unique, whatever genre you want to peg this one as there’s one thing for certain — Gianni and Andrea are on to something big and interesting. And their presence on this week’s New Music Friday is testament to that fact.
Dinner Party – Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder
This seven-song, casual collaborative album has been the soundtrack to a lot of my days working from home in the last few weeks.
Terrace Martin, a producer and songwriter best known for producing Kendrick Lamar and YG as well as releasing albums as a solo artist, is keen to stress that Dinner Party is as laid-back as its name suggests. It's a meeting of four friends who could let loose in the studio, making music that sounds like a casual conversation.
“We wanted to break that barrier down and just make it more about the music. Not about what anybody knows less or knows more. Just make something that feels good to the heart.”
“Over Now” with The Weeknd deconstructed by Calvin Harris
Today, Calvin Harris took his listeners behind the scenes to share the creative process of his August single with The Weeknd. Check it out below!
Thanks for reading & listening! I’d love to hear your comments, questions, thoughts.
